Training Your ESA Pet Dog

Dogs are indeed man’s best friend, for historically they have been in human companionship for around ten thousand years. Once mainly used for the purpose of assisting humans in their hunting, retrieving, herding, etc. pet dogs have now taken the role of affectional and loving household members ready to shower their pet parent and the household members with love and care.

Their intelligence has allowed them to provide support for both mentally and physically disabled people, as emotional support or therapy animals, and as service animals. With an ESA letter, you can have your dog as the emotional support animal, such that you can have the emotional support at times of need: during air travel or/and while living inside the house.

Getting the right dog

When choosing the dog that is the right for you and that can be trained requires the dog to be of specific breeds. The breed of the animal should be one that is intelligent and has a sociable nature as it is easier to be trained and is naturally calm around other people. There are many dog breeds that are known for their sociability and others that are known for their intelligence, and then there are those that combine these two qualities, such dog breeds can become great ESAs. Dogs such as Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, and Poodles are such types of dogs that are highly trainable and are calm and sociable.Try to have your ESA letter for housing with you, which you can give to the property manager.

Getting it at the right time

The pet dog should be gotten before its first year is complete, as the pet dog is more open to learning before it reaches adulthood. You can also bring in the dog during puppyhood and allow it to become familiar with you and the surrounding early on.

Basic training such as crate training and litter training should start very early on, whereas other training should follow after that. The crate training is essential as it allows your pet dog to be okay with being left alone for short amounts of time, and saves the pet dog from being depressed and upset about it.

Training your dog to support you

The emotional support animal letter must be recommended by an authorized psychological wellness subject matter expert. You can teach your dog to make its presence felt when you are feeling depressed, anxious, or when you start to panic. Dogs are trained to what is known as Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT), which has helped people with various mental difficulties such as autism, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, etc. In DPT the pet dog helps the human companion by showing support and affection by simple physical acts such as lying across the lap, putting their head on you, allowing themself to get petted, etc.

You can start training your dog with the simple paws up and paws down command that prompts the pet to put its paws on you. You can use treats to help you with the training and do away with them once the dog follows your command perfectly.

You can change the training a bit and get your pet dog in the habit of climbing on your lap, leaning against you, or sitting by your feet. Patience and daily practice will help the pet dog learn the DPT and other techniques quickly.

Moreover, you can also mix the training with allowing your pet dog to automatically sense your need for support through mimicking body postures or language that you might have during a time of stress, anxiety, or discomfort.

With the proper training, you will find your ESA dog the perfect support animals that will help you control your mental difficulties and allow you to operate normally in your everyday life.
